‘Color Purple’ auditions set Wednesday at MCC

Auditions for Meridian Community College’s Arts & Letters Series production of The Color Purple the Musical will be Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 6 p.m. in the McCain Theater.

Dr. Todd Brand, MCC fine arts division chair and director of the Arts & Letters Series, said all roles will be cast with some 18-20 actors to be chosen. Actors ranging in ages 16 and up are needed. “Those who audition need to prepare 16 bars of a song of their choosing,” Brand said. He noted there will no accompaniment so auditions will be a cappella.

The Color Purple the Musical is a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Since its premiere in 2005, it has remained either on Broadway or on a national tour, always garnering large crowds and great public and critical reviews.

The gripping score features blues, jazz, gospel, ragtime and African music.

The story follows the life of Celie, a poor girl from Georgia, as she faces an abusive father, an exploitative husband and separation from her sister and friend. She endures through it all to discover her own self-worth and dignity. A testament to the unbreakable power of the spirit, the show also unveils the deep love that connects all, regardless of time and space.

This Arts & Letters Series production will run April 25-28.
