MCC hosts two commencement; scholars recognized for achievements

Applause and celebrations were the orders of the day when Meridian Community College held two May 2019 commencements on Friday, May 3, in the Evangel Temple.

MCC President Dr. Thomas Huebner said the College is proud of the students’ accomplishments and their futures. “We look forward to seeing where they go and what they do and want them to know they are always welcome home at MCC,” he said.

Two ceremonies were hosted by the College; one was for students in the Health Education and Nursing programs and the other for the remainder of the other programs including University Transfer.

The highlight of the second commencement came when five top graduates were recognized and rewarded for their academic performance yielding scholarships to continue their academic endeavors.

Alexandre’ail Jackson of Osyka and Joshua Cochran of Lucedale were named recipients of the Phil Hardin Foundation Scholarships, which are funded by the Phil Hardin Foundation through the Meridian Community College Foundation. Jackson and Cochran each received $5,000.

Jackson is an officer in the Phi Theta Kappa, the international academic honor society for community and junior college students, a mid-distance runner for the Eagle Track and Field team and is a Dean’s and President’s List student. She is majoring in physical therapy and plans to attend Mississippi State University.

Cochran is a member of PTK, the Eagle soccer team, the Phil Hardin Foundation Honors College at MCC and the Baptist Student Union. In addition to being a lab assistant for the College’s science division, he has been active in community service. He will continue his studies at Mississippi State University and will pursue a career in dentistry.

Karey Ridge Mathis of Quitman Bryan Rivers of Hickory and Dunnam Shirley of Meridian were selected as recipients of the H.M. Ivy Scholarship. This scholarship is in memory of Dr. H.M. Ivy, the founding father of Meridian Community College and is presented to outstanding graduates based on academic excellence, extra-curricular participation, financial need and faculty appraisals. All three received $2,000 for their junior year of study at senior institutions, and provided that their academic excellence continues, $2,000 for their senior year of study.
