MCC Miller Art Gallery ramps up for 2018-19 season

First exhibit begins today, Monday, Aug. 20

Who says learning has to come only from books? MCC’s Ronald R. Miller Art Gallery is dispelling that myth with this year’s varied exhibition schedule.

“The exhibition season is put together with the idea of what can we learn from these exhibits,” said John Marshall, MCC art instructor and Miller Art Gallery curator. And this year’s five offerings meet those standards.

To kick off the season, art faculty from Mississippi University for Women (MUW) will take the spotlight for the Aug. 20-Sept. 27 exhibit. “It’s an eclectic show with a variety of styles, techniques and disciplines,” Marshall said. With an emphasis on paintings, drawings and graphic designs, the MUW show will combine art with a variety of older work and a few newer pieces. MUW artists featured in this show include Alex Stelioes-Wills, Ian Childers, Jonathan Cumberland, Shawn Dickey, Robert Gibson and Andrew Snyder. An opening reception is today, Monday, Aug. 20, from 4-5:30 p.m.

Textiles and ceramics will be the focus for the Oct. 11-Nov. 27 show featuring the works of Karen Arzamendi and Kent Allen. “Karen’s works are colorful, playful styles with an emphasis on quilting techniques with a fine arts message,” Marshall said. “It’s a beautiful display of her imagination along with her technical skills,” he added. Arzamendi is a resident of Columbus.

Allen, a Meridianite, and a former MCC adjunct instructor, is known for his gifted styles in ceramics and paintings, Marshall said, and his works for the show will have a boat theme to it. Allen is the author of two books and plays the banjo and guitar. The opening reception date is Oct. 11, from 4-5:30 p.m.

As the new year begins in January, visitors to the Miller Art Gallery will be treated to selections from the College’s permanent art collection. “This show will feature the works by Homer Casteel and works donated or purchased for the collection,” Marshall said. The Jan. 14 through Feb. 7 show will also feature recent gifts to the collection. “We’re always open to gifts of art that will boost the Miller Art Collection,” Marshall added.

Paintings, sculptures and drawings by Marshall will be the feature of the Feb. 18-March 14 show in the Miller Art Gallery. Visitors will see the MCC instructor’s new investigative works as well as art he previously created. The opening reception is planned for Feb. 18 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

To finish the academic year, Marshall said the season rounds out with the ever popular, ever diverse student art competition. This April 11-25 Fine Arts Students show is juried and allows MCC art students to experience in judged competition. Winning works are rewarded by stipends donated by The MCC Foundation and the Best of Show honors the memory of a former MCC art student, John Michael Rushing. The opening reception for this show is April 11 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

The MCC Miller Art Gallery, located in the Davidson Fine Arts Center in Ivy Hall, is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free of charge.
